I'm looking up some specific instances in Henry V where Shakespeare makes things humorous. I found this interesting article called Two New Sources for Shakespeare's Bawdy French. In this article, Timothy Billings discusses the double entendres between Henry and Catherine while they speak French.
If you'd like to read it, go ahead and click the link, but I won't bother going into details as to what this article specifically cited because it's actually really crass! And the interesting part is that these crass French-English puns were around during Shakespeare's time. He most likely knew full well what he was implying.
This is something comedians struggle with all the time. It's hard to keep clean after a while, so often dirty references make an audience laugh (mostly out of discomfort) quickly and effectively. I guess I just expected more out of William. He's smart enough. And from this article, it seems like any audience member with some proficiency in French (which would have been a lot of his upper class audience) would have grasped his innuendos in Henry V and understood the double entendres.
